In a previous post, Anthony wrote about how compromise and communication are essential elements in maintaining a successful travel relationship.

I also wrote about how “me time” can do wonders for avoiding arguments and keeping the relationship fresh.

But there’s another essential suggestion to keep in mind: making sure each partner has certain responsibilities on the road.

When it concerns planning a trip and traveling as a couple, there are numerous tasks to carry out when you travel. questions continuously need to be answered: Where are you going to stay? What visas do you need? What currency is accepted? Who’s going to make transport inquiries? Who’s going to book flights?

Splitting up these tasks early on can make traveling with your partner far simpler and much less stressful than a disorganized approach, giving you time to focus on the thrills and experiences rather than the mundane and nitty-gritty aspects of long-term travel.

Anthony and I learned from the get-go that it pays to know who’s doing what on the road. We both now have our own little roles we take on every day.

For example, I now am the official essential bearer for our room, which implies I’m responsible for making sure our room is locked and that I have the essential safely tucked away and on me whatsoever times.

For instance, Anthony is in charge of booking and organizing all onward travel, whether overland or by plane, and I’m in charge of or researching and finding accommodation at our next destination. We both chose on these roles fairly early on.

A month or so into our trip we were finding ourselves being disorganized in terms of transport and accommodation. I remember specifically, in Malaysia, we were traveling late at night into the town of Semporna. Ant had told me that he already had accommodation in mind.

However, when we finally got off the bus, Ant didn’t have a clue where any of the hostels were or how to get to them (and, of course, there were no tuk-tuk chauffeurs in sight!). The road was deserted except for a few stray dogs. A heated argument ensued, and it wasn’t until much later that we ended up in a hostel room.

This only had to happen once for it to be chose that I would be in charge of finding accommodation on our trip.

When deciding who will take on what roles and responsibilities, it all comes down to knowing your partner. You should have an understanding of their strengths and weaknesses. I’m in charge of finding and researching accommodation because I’m good at it. While we try not to plan too far into our trip, I love to be organized.

Anthony can’t stand spending time online searching for places to stay and reading reviews. dar eu? Îmi place! Anthony trusts that I will choose a good place to stay, and he’s pleased that he doesn’t have to do it himself.

What I’m not good at are directions. never have been. getting from A to B has never been a strong suit of mine.

I also know that Ant is better with saving money while traveling. That is his strength. He sorts out exchange rates and conversions and knows when best to exchange our money.

We now take pleasure in living in places, whether it’s in our own apartment or condo or house sitting. This allows us to fully immerse ourselves in the culture and community. We get to have local neighbours, we’re able to know about the best restaurants, secret hikes and off-track beaches. We can unpack for a while and make long-lasting friendships.

We still have the desire for adventure, to learn and explore. but we also have the desire to sit still and put some effort into our occupation and into learning about a place, its people and its culture.

Over the past four months, our web site has been seriously neglected. Călătorind în Asia Centrală: Presiunile procesului de planificare

Mai avem 3 luni înainte ca contractul nostru de învățare în limba engleză aici, în China, și am început oficial să planificăm pentru următoarea noastră călătorie!

Se dovedește a fi destul de mult procesul. Știam că călătoria într -una dintre cele mai puțin turistice regiuni de pe planetă va prezenta unele dificultăți, dar ne -a uimit totuși cât de mult trebuie să intrăm în această călătorie.

Vizele din Asia Centrală post-sovietică devin mai simple de obținut, dar acest lucru nu implică faptul că sunt ușoare.

În această regiune a lumii, avem nevoie de o viză (permis de intrare ștampilat în pașaportul nostru) pentru fiecare țară la care urmează, cu excepția Kirgazistanului.

Aceste permise trebuie obținute înainte de a ajunge și de multe ori necesită rezervări la hotel, bilete de tren în și în afara țării și, în unele cazuri, chiar și o scrisoare de invitație de la o companie din țară pe care sperăm să o vizităm.

GETTING lost HIKING IN A JUNGLE IN COSTA RICA

“Let’s go hiking in Arenal,” I said one early morning at breakfast.

“OK, we’ll go after lunch,” said Gloria and Lena. Gloria was a thirty-something olive skinned Spanish woman and her pal Lena, a short Latino with jet black hair from Chicago. Both were the only native Spanish speakers on the tour and helped me greatly improve my Spanish.

“Gracias,” I replied.

We were in Arenal, a small town up in central Costa Rica famed for its active volcano of the same name, caving, lake, hot springs, and gigantic waterfall. It was a stop on everyone’s itinerary, a place to embrace that pura vida lifestyle. during the day, smoke rose from the volcano as lava oozed out of it casting a dusty appearance to the mountain. At night, flashes of red let you know lava is oozing down its side.

It was our second day there and I wanted to hike some of the (safe) trails around the mountain and catch the sunset over the lake. Hiking in Costa Rica is one of the top things to do in the country and I wanted to do as much of it as possible.

We told the cab driver we’d be back at the park entrance at six and started off on our adventure to watch the sunset over the lake. We headed into the jungle, which typically quickly thinned out to rocky trails spreading out like spider veins from the side of the mountains. These were remnants of eruptions long past. Dead earth that was slowly coming back to life. We wandered off the train and down these gravel paths, finding where they led. This was an adventure. I felt like Indiana Jones. I jumped over rocks and climbed boulders, getting Gloria and Lena to take photos of me. I followed unknown local animals around.

Returning to the official trail, we walked towards the lake. On the way, we consulted the vague trail map our hotel had given us.

“I think we’re at this cross-section,” I said pointing to a spot on the map. “We passed these lava fields a bit ago so I think if we keep going a little more down that way, we’ll get to the lake.”

Gloria leaned over. “Yeah, I think so too. We have a few hours until sunset so let’s keep hiking. We can loop around these side trails and then get back to the main trail.”

As the sun began to set, we turned back towards the lake.

Consulting our map again, Gloria said:

“Hmm, I think we’re now here.”

We weren’t a 100% sure what cross trail we were on. The map was vague and had little reference to distance.

“Maybe we walk back two junctions and we’ll hit the main trail. There’s this other trail but I dunno if we are close.”

As we consulting this map, a few hikers passed us.

“Excuse, can you tell us where we are? Which way to the lake?,” I asked.

“Just go back and take a left at the sign,” said one of the guys as he passed, gesturing vaguely as he pointed.

“Bine, multumesc!”

As they continued on, we looked at the map.

“If he said that way, then we must be at this crossroads,” I said pointing to a junction closer to the main path. “That left must be this other path we were just looking at.”

We proceeded in the direction he told us and took a left.

But, instead, our trail instead kept going and we soon found ourselves deeper into the forest. There was no junction, no turn-off. Our guess at the junction was wrong. As the sun set overhead and sky turned a deep pink, we became more and more lost. We went down trails that ended abruptly. We doubled back, found new trails but kept going around in circles. Day turned into night. Mosquitoes came out to hunt their confused prey (us), and animals came out to frolic, no longer scared off by a thousand hiking tourists.

Twilight set in and our flashlights batteries died. All we had to guide us was the light from our cameras. We had no food or water. This trip was only supposed to last a couple of hours. We were unprepared.

“We need to find a point that we recognize and then work from there. We’re going around in circles,” Lena said.

Ea avea dreptate. We were making no progress.

The thought of spending a night in the jungle was making us edgy. Our tour group would be feasting on a substantial dinner while we found our way out of this mess. would we have to spend the night here? When would they start to worry about us? would it be too late by then? The park wasn’t that big but we were essentially wandering in the dark.

We came to a fork in the road.

“I remember this place,” I said.

“I think we go….that way,” I said pointing to another path. “The map shows a dirt road at the end. roads mean cars. automobiles mean people. people means back in time for dinner.”

“Let’s hope,” replied Gloria.

Following the trail, we eventually came to a dirt road. It was on the map and had a science station marked on it. One way led to it, the other to the main road. Figuring we were at least in the right direction, we turned left into the darkness.

We’d picked the wrong way though. in front of us was the gate to the science station. ConversiNg în spaniolă cu garda, Gloria și Lena i -au spus situația noastră. HOW TO travel and work around THE world WITH WWOOF

WWOOF stands for “Worldwide opportunities on organic Farms” and WWOOFing around the world is an incredibly popular way to travel long-term on a budget. In exchange for working on an organic farm, travelers get free room and board — allowing them to extend their travels without breaking the bank.

Since I’ve never WWOOFed, I turned to frequent WWOOFer and freelance writer Sophie McGovern to tell us all about it.

A storm was brewing in northern Italy, moody clouds rolling over the valley. inside a farmhouse, my friend and I were dusting shelves of antique books and ornaments. Not something we expected to be doing on our WWOOF stay, but neither had we expected to find a papier-mâché chicken suit in our bedroom.

When it comes to WWOOFing, you just have to roll with it.

Our host, Silvia, was a tough, middle-aged woman who ran a small-holding complete with a vegetable garden, fruit orchard, goats, and chickens. Her English was basic, but she particularly liked to use the term “strong woman” whenever mothers, independent women, and high-achieving ladies in general were mentioned.

As we dusted, lightning illuminated the valley. Silvia was in the kitchen preparing a dinner of goat meat, potatoes, and salad, all organic produce from the farm. We had taken no part in sacrificing the goat to the gods of gastronomy, but we had harvested the potatoes and salad that morning, which made them taste especially good.

The builders who were renovating the barn next door joined us for dinner along with the third volunteer on the farm. Italian conversation flowed, accompanied by a generous helping of laughter. My friend and I understood little (our vocabulary extended only to soft fruits, garden equipment, and motivational lady talk), but hand gestures and facial expressions sufficed. The other volunteer, an American girl who was WWOOFing primarily to improve her Italian, was soaking up the organic language lesson.

Red wine and rustic bread accompanied the meal, both made at nearby farms and exchanged for Silvia’s homemade goat’s cheese. Out there, produce was currency. We had been introduced to this and many other principles of sustainable living during our stay. never again would I underestimate the value of a good wheel of cheese.

At the end of the night, Silvia informed us of the next day’s tasks: weeding the asparagus beds, picking fruit, and making hay in the afternoon, should the sun be shining.

Our inexperience in all things farm-related had not been a problem since we arrived. There had been a few crossed wires, like when I threw leftovers into the trash instead of adding them to the compost and got told off, but on the whole we found that if you’re willing to learn and don’t have an aversion to dirt, bugs, or early mornings, you’ll get by just fine.

What is WWOOFing

WWOOF is a service that matches people looking for work on farms with farmers who are looking for labor. It’s more a loose affiliation of like-minded groups using the same name than one large international organization.

In order to become a WWOOFer, you need to sign up for the national organization in the country you want. There is no international WWOOF membership, so you’ll have to buy a membership from each WWOOFing country’s organization (WWOOF is made up of almost a hundred organizations). annual membership usually costs around $30-40 USD per country per person (there is also a joint membership for couples that offers a slight discount). You don’t need any previous experience in farming to do this, just a desire to work.

As you can imagine, WWOOFing opens endless opportunities on an extended-travel trip. If you make your way around the world visiting a selection of the 130 countries and the 12,000 hosts that participate in WWOOF, you can save tens of thousands of dollars over the course of a year.

You can also learn skills, absorb languages, and make friends.

Over our two-month stay, we spent zero on food and accommodation in a region of Italy where it otherwise costs backpackers at least 20 EUR a night for a hostel and 15 EUR a day for food.

Over our two-month stay, that meant a total savings of at least 2,000 EUR!

How to join WWOOF

We had joined WWOOF Italia from a computer in our English dorm room but the process works the same no matter the country you want:

Fill out their membership application and pay the fee

Start searching for opportunities!

You have to be 18 years of age or older to join most WWOOF destinations, but different rules apply to different countries.

Germany, the UK, Portugal, and Italy take WWOOFers under 18 but you may need a letter of consent from your parent or legal guardian. WWOOF Switzerland has a minimum age of 16 while you have to be 20 years old to WWOOF in Turkey.

Once you’ve filled outthe online membership form and paid the fee, you’ll be sent a list of participating farms in your country of choice and can decide which ones to contact.

Each farm description will tell you something about the host, their farm, and their expectations. read it carefully and ask for accommodation details, examples of work, weekly routine, and food arrangements before you commit. You can also ask whether they have specific house rules and if they’re fluent in English. If they’re not, don’t be put off; this could be a great opportunity to learn a new language!

How to choose a Farm

“Farm” is a fairly loose term. Eco-communities, commercial farms, vineyards, and back-garden vegetable plots are all found on WWOOFing list.

Shortly after joining WWOOF Italia, we were sent a list of over a hundred farms. deciding to spend two months in Italy as part of our gap year, we contacted a couple of farms that sounded appealing, one in the northern region of Piedmonte and one in Tuscany, with the intention of staying one month at each.

Some WWOOFers like to spend shorter periods at farms (1-3 weeks) and visit a wider variety of farms. That lets them explore the country while giving them an out in case their farm stay doesn’t go well. Others prefer longer stays so they can really immerse themselves in the region.

If you’re new to both farm work and WWOOFing, I’d suggest a shorter stay so you can get a feel for the lifestyle without having to commit yourself for months.

Additionally, when comparing options, I always check the travel routes and ticket prices to ensure that getting there won’t be too expensive. Volunteers must pay their own transport costs, so if you’re traveling on a budget, ticket prices can have a huge impact on which farms you apply to.

In the case of Silvia’s farm, we found that we could get a flight to Milan with a low-cost airline and then take the train to Asti. Silvia met us there in her beat-up old car. altogether the journey cost less than 50 EUR.

How to overcome problems (F.A.Q.)

What happens if something goes wrong?

I have encountered WWOOF hosts on my travels that I haven’t got on with as well. On the second farm in Italy, we were asked to move a huge pile of firewood that was full of scorpions and had to refuse, then later felt that we were spending too much time weeding flower beds. In this case, you can speak openly to your host and try to find a solution.

If you really don’t like a place and want to leave, you have every right to do so, but volunteers are expected to be respectful of their hosts and give them sufficient notice unless it’s an emergency. In the end, we left the Tuscan farm a week early because the situation didn’t improve, but out of the more than 30 farms I’ve visited across the world, this has never happened again.

If there’s a problem:

Let your host know. document the issue if it is something serious, just in case

Give them time to fix it.

If it’s not fixed, tell them you are leaving.

Give them a week’s notice to be respectful to them and your fellow WWOOFers.

Remember you are volunteering so you must put your safety and comfort first.

All in all, WWOOF is a cheap way to travel, a great way to learn, and a sure-fire way to have a whole load of adventures.

On a farm in Ecuador, there were an incredible amount of fun activities that we could get involved with. Making chocolate, coffee, pasta, and yogurt from scratch were fantastic learning experiences, as was making a cob bench with several of the other volunteers (cob is a natural building material, and feet are the best tools for mixing it!). because the farm was also an eco-community and nature reserve, the tasks changed every day and were immensely varied, from studying the native trees to helping install a wind turbine.
